Upgrading the touristic R4D cycling route along the Wörthersee in Kärnten
The R4D lakeshore route between Klagenfurt and Velden is one of Carinthia's busiest cycling corridors, carrying 1,200 to 1,400 cyclists a day in summer. However, long stretches lack dedicated infrastructure. In the tight corridor between Reifnitz and Sekirn, cyclists currently share narrow lanes with motor traffic, creating high safety risks.
Commissioned by Region Wörthersee-Rosental Tourismus GmbH, urb-x partnered with engineering firm Kastner to develop a feasibility concept and cost estimate for an elevated route. Over roughly 800 m, the envisioned cycle path runs above the existing road (Landesstraße), following the line of the retaining wall. Two gentle ramps connect the elevated path to the network, complete with a scenic viewing and rest platform on the Sekirn side.
By physically decoupling cycling from motor traffic, the project eliminates major safety hazards and is expected to boost bicycle adoption along the lake. Because the corridor is already publicly owned, the concept requires no land acquisition and preserves vital local parking. The result is a project that closes a critical infrastructure gap while harmonizing with the Wörthersee shoreline.
